We’ve been to Miami, Tokyo, and now Danebury!
This show and its treasure hunting metal detectorists takes place in Danebury, a fictional small town in northern Essex, England. The beauty of England is that there truly IS treasure to be found. Is there gold in ‘dem ‘der hills?
Andy and Lance sure hope so!!!
“Are you metal detectors?”
“No, my dear. THIS is a metal detector. WE are metal detectorists.”
Why is this a feel good show?
The two main characters, Andy and Lance, have this sweet bond. Their dialogue is quiet, slow, mundane, and ever so witty. What bonds them is the search for a Saxon hoard. TREASURE! Then you have their motley crew of detectorists – the DMDC (Danebury Metal Detecting Club). An odd group of people, indeed, but they have each other’s backs.
JW called me an anglophile when we started dating. A whaaaaaaa? I had to look it up (how embarrassing) – An Anglophile is a person who admires England, its people, and its culture (Wikipedia). I thought, “Why yes, I am!” I’m a huge fan of the BBC and British TV shows.
British humour is just… different… You can see how American humour is going to land a mile away, laughing as much out of obligation as humour, whereas British humour just… floats by… leaving you giggling in the aftermath.
I loved the repartee between Andy and Lance, Andy and his girlfriend Becky insulting each other in the cutest of ways, the subtle silly humour of the DMDC, and the laugh out loud “fights” between the DMDC and their nemesis metal detecting club from a neighbouring village. It’s comedy gold. Obviously others agree with me, detectorists won the British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) award in 2015 for Situational Comedy.
This. Show. Is. Beautiful. The shots of the fields, trees, flowers, and the LIGHT… sigh. Soooo pretty. I’ve never been so HAPPY to watch people just walk through fields. Seriously.
The intricate strumming of the guitar. The haunting violin. The Lyrics!
Will you search through the lonely earth for me?
Climb through the briar and bramble?
I’ll be your treasure.
I felt the touch of the kings and the breath of the wind.
I knew the call of all the song birds. They sang all the wrong words.
I’m waiting for you. I’m waiting for you.
Will you swim through the briny sea for me?
Roll along the ocean’s floor?
I’ll be your treasure.
I’m with the ghosts of the men who can never sing again.
There’s a place follow me, where a love lost at sea,
Is waiting for you. Is waiting for you.
Haunting in the sweetest of ways. Listen for yourselves!
So there ya have it! Another FEEL GOOD FRIDAY!
Until next time,
Watch. Laugh. Relax.
